The Club’s success depends on your active support and involvement.  There are many opportunities for our members to become actively involved in the Club – whether by attending events, organizing activities or becoming an Officer.  If you would like to help plan and organize our activities see the opportunities below or contact our President, Grace Hsieh.

Sunday Brunch Series

Our brunch program includes speakers covering a broad range of topics which reflect the academic diversity at Yale.  Past speakers have included the CEO of Microsoft China, the Deputy Foreign Minister of the PRC, and the Chief of IMF in the PRC.  We welcome Club members to invite and host one of our monthly brunches, held at the Swissotel.   Please contact our Brunch Program Chair, Neil Arora, if you are interested to invite a guest speaker and host a brunch.

Bulldogs in Beijing

The Bulldogs Program was established in 2003 with British Bulldogs in London and was the first coordinated internship program of its kind at Yale.  Following on the success of British Bulldogs, Tom Melcher ’85 and Sharon Ruwart ’85 spearheaded and launched Bulldogs in Beijing in the summer of 2005, introducing 24 students to professional opportunities in Beijing. Internships were offered in the fields of Communications, Development, Event/Program Coordination, Finance, Non-Profit, Publications, Research, Sales/Marketing, and Technology. The program grew to 32 Bulldogs in the summer of 2006.

Would you like to have a current Yale undergraduate intern at your company for the summer?  Please contact the Bulldogs in Beijing coordinators, Tom Melcher or Sharon Ruwart, for more information.

The Book Program

The Smiling Library, which distributes books to rural middle and high schools, has been an important volunteer effort by members of the Yale Club of Beijing for the last three years. This year's program also relies on the volunteer efforts of many students and faculty affiliated with the Cancer Institute, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College, and particularly Ms. Cui Hong.

Based on discussions with rural schools and Yale students, the program is experimenting with a new method of distributing books this year. Many rural schools have indicated that their students and teachers have never heard English from native language speakers or met Chinese students who have traveled abroad for their education.

We have been told that visits by Yale students to the villages would be as highly prized as the gifts of books they bring. This would also present an opportunity for Yale students in Beijing to learn more about life in today’s rural countryside.

This summer, we are launching experimental pilot program in which undergraduates from Yale (and friends attending other American universities) will travel to rural villages with our gifts of books. We are specifically working with high risk rural communities that are sites of ongoing health projects involving Sino-China collaborations, or are resource-poor home villages of staff or students of the Cancer Institute-Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences.  We will be selecting a variety of newly released English-language classics book series in bilingual formats or with English annotation.

Please contact the coordinator for the Book Program, Gwen Zahner, for more information on how to get involved in this wonderful effort.
